Big Spring Summer Staff 2018

Big Spring Ridge Leaders

Emerson Underwood

My name is Emerson and I’m spending my 4th summer at Sanborn this year. I was born and raised in North Carolina then went to school at the University of South Carolina where I studied environmental science. This past Fall and Spring I worked for the High Trails Outdoor Ed Center and spent the winter back at home in Charlotte. I enjoy dancing and laughing and listening to loud music and trying to make other people laugh and also reading and hiking and exploring. I’m jacked to gills for some sunshine and to take some campers and counselors to some cool places they’ve never been before at Sanborn. Excited for another summer with the boiz!

Ayden Bolin

My name is Ayden and I am out at Sanborn for my third summer. I am from Wichita, Kansas, but am going into my third year of college at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington where I am majoring in Biology and minoring in Sociology and Anthropology. I enjoy biking, hiking, and music of every kind. I am so stoked to enjoy the great outdoors with old and new friends, and to learn and grow with everyone out here.

Walker West

Howdy! My name is Walker West and I am incredibly excited to be spending another summer at Big Spring. Although this is my third summer on staff, I was a long-time camper back in the old days (well not that long ago). Originally from Denver, I currently call Salt Lake City home where I am studying Global Health at the University of Utah. When I am not at the library studying, I enjoy powder days on the Wasatch front, relaxing with friends, volunteering with my fraternity, and running. I am happy to hang up the hat of a clinical Advanced EMT in the Emergency Department and join in on the brotherhood back at Big Spring this summer. I am most looking forward to the crazy camp traditions like counselor hunt, vespers, and long trips! It is only a matter of time before we are hiking, riding horses, and taking a run-down “Jaws.” Looking forward to seeing old friends and make new ones!

Mikey Rainey

Hello! My name is Mikey, and this will be my third summer at Big Spring! I am currently working on getting my elementary education degree in Denver, CO. I also work as a Paraprofessional and assistant coach of cross country and track at a K-8 school in the Denver area. When I am not busy with all of that, I enjoy running, hiking, reading a book, or just being out and about trying new things! Already I can smell the campfires, and the amazing food in lodge! I am greatly looking forward to getting out on the trail, camping out under the Colorado night sky, and seeing what Sanborn 2018 has in store! See you all at camp!

Tijler deJong

Hey everyone! My name is Tijler deJong this will be my fourth year at Big Spring and i cannot wait to see all of the new and returning faces. For the last year i have been working in an elementary school helping the special needs kids mostly and i have had so much fun. I was taking a break from my own education to make sure that I did in fact want to work in schools as a therapist or counselor. Since I loved working at the school so much I will be going back to school to finish my degrees in social work and psychology. I am a generally laid back person and I try to always keep a calm and level head. I love games of all kinds from board games to card games to just making up something on the go. I am so excited to see what this summer will offer! I know that everyone coming to camp is bringing something new and fun with them and i can’t wait to learn and share with everyone. See you all soon!

ANTERO

Andrew Essig

Hey whats up! My name’s Andrew Essig and I’m a previous camper of three years and I’m ridiculously excited to become a first-time staff member as an assistant counselor! I’ve been described as playful, a walking hug and an absolute hippie by my friends. Probably because I’m all about being in nature, connecting with others, and having a good, fun time!I’m originally from Denver but I’ve been attending my first year of college at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon where I’m goin for a degree in Psychology (I’m hoping to become Counseling Psychologist eventually). Usually when I’m not “college-ing” I’m hopping around campus talking with friends, exploring the temperate rainforest that surrounds my campus, going on trips to the Oregon coast, hikes and bike rides in the wilderness, listening to or playing music, or nerding out about movies (I’m super into film analysis). As born adventurer, I’m always down for new experiences, a bunch of which have come from going to Sanborn. At the same time I do enjoy taking some time to myself for self reflection and meditating. That’s what I love about nature, it gives me the opportunity to adventure as well as the opportunity to center myself and reconnect with the Earth I’m excited have an awesome time getting to know everyone as well as go on adventures with the campers maybe learn or thing or two (who knows!) It will be good to be back with my Big Spring Warriors! Not to mention be re-connected, finally, with the Colorado Rockies, the nature that encompasses it, and the crisp mountain air Looking forward to a great summer!!!

Luis Gonzalez

Howdy partner! I’m Luis, I’m from Colima, Mexico and this will be my first time at Sanborn Western Camp as a Counselor. I am currently an undergraduate but almost there to get a BA in Language teaching. I am eager to meet y’all and be friends with to make lifetime memories. Some fun facts I can say about me are that sometimes I like to dance when no one is around because I can’t let nobody steal my random dance moves, I love food so much that when I serve myself a big portion of food, I feel like everyone is staring at me like Kevin Hart giving a grandpa stare and I have got a good memory so I won’t forget y’all. I like to be outdoors as much being indoors with good company to talk about interesting topics and funny things to laugh at. When it comes to do anything do it with patience and dedication because it can be really rewarding at the end. I look forward to instill that this summer!

Andrew Chiles

Hey y’all! My name is Andrew Chiles and I’m from New Bern, North Carolina. I go to UNC Chapel Hill with hopes of being a doctor one day. This will be my first summer at Sanborn and I am super excited for camp. I’ve always loved the outdoors and spent my childhood fishing along the coast of NC. I also spent a month with NOLS, backpacking and canoeing, in the Yukon which really made me fall in love with the mountains. Im excited to hopefully bring a little of the coast to Sanborn, teach some campers this year how to fly fish and have a lot of fun!

Aaron Spratt

My name is Aaron Spratt. Frederick, Maryland I was born and raised. At UMBC is where I spend most of my days. I am studying Biochemistry, so I am just as at home in the lab as I am in the outdoors. I love everything about the outdoors, but my favorite activity is climbing. All types of climbing with all types of people. It’s fun to just get out there and touch some rocks. This is going to be my first year out at Sanborn. I think the best part of the summer is going to be meeting people from all across the country. Also, I do not like the cold, so thinking of laying out under the stars on a warm night at camp is the thought that is helping me finish this semester strong.

I was born and raised in Conifer, CO (30 miles outside Denver). I am a avid hiker and backpacker. I love being outside and experiencing what it means to be in the wilderness. I also enjoy kayaking, even though I don’t get to do it very often. Before leaving for Sanborn I was employed at a small business in Conifer called Taspen’s. I worked with essential oils and herbs to craft different concoctions and recipes. I have a passion for creating creams, and I hope to return to this wonderful craft after camp. I cannot wait to explore the forest and mountains this summer! I have a passion for the outdoors and all the benefits that it brings. I can’t wait to see you all soon!

Dylan Morris

Hey guys! My name is Dylan Morris, and this will be my fourth summer at camp. I also spent a ton of time up at Sanborn throughout my high school years, and I can’t get enough of it. When not at Sanborn, I’m studying at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. There I’m double majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Physics, and I’ll be starting my last year right after camp! Woo! I love being outdoors, be it hiking, climbing, swimming, horseback riding, or anything really. I’ll be working mostly with the horse program this summer as our Junior Wrangler, and I’m very excited to meet all of our new riders, and help them hone in on their skills and get to know the horses!

Keegan Scherdin

Hi, my name is Keegan Scherdin and I am the oldest of three boys in my family and I’m from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, IL. I recently just finished my first year at Texas Tech University with a major in biochemistry! At Texas Tech I am also involved with Young Life which is a group that helps high schoolers in the area by giving them a place to come together and hang out. Some hobbies of mine include skiing, shooting/hunting, hiking, and pretty much anything to do with water whether it be a day at the pool or a relaxing river trip. My goal is to bag at least three 14ers this summer as I have never summited one before and I’m ready to make this summer memorable for your kids and myself. Overall, this summer is looking to be a lot of fun and I can’t wait to show our campers just how beautiful the world can be when we take our faces away from technology.

Riley Wood

Hi y’all I’m Riley wood and im from Austin Texas! This will be my first summer at sanborn and I am super excited for the summer. I love to climb, slackline, and be in the outdoors. I look forward to being outdoors and teaching campers all about nature and the outdoors!

DEMOCRAT

Steven Allison

What Up campers!!! My name is Steve Allison and I am super stoked to work at Sanborn. All. Summer. Long. It’s gonna rock! I have never been to camp before, but I have driven by it dozens of times on my way to ski Breck and A Basin and know just how stunningly beautiful the area is. I grew up in Colorado Springs and attended college at Bucknell University where I majored in Chemistry and minored in Physics and German (immer gut, jah?). My plan following this summer is to teach abroad for a couple of years – first stop, South Korea – then attend grad school. Beyond academic pursuits, I’m always up for trekking the great outdoors, and my favorite activities include: running, swimming, biking, climbing, volleyballing, snowboarding, smiling, breathing that crisp Colorado air, waking up others at oh-god-in-the-morning and just being around friends and family. I can’t wait to rock climb, horseback ride (although hopefully not bareback), make s’mores and get to know my fellow campers. See you at camp!

Scott Morgan

Hey there! My name is Scott Morgan and I’m a city boy from Chicago. I’ll be enjoying life as an AC this summer, as I am returning after being a camper for four years including being an Outbacker. Sanborn has touched me personally and has inspired me to pursue a degree in environmental engineering at Colorado State University this coming year. I am constantly active and compete in Cross Country and Track, while I also enjoy coming to Colorado to hike, climb, ski, and reminisce in the wild. My favorite music genre is classical and I have also played the cello for 12 years. Also to note is that I have two crazy younger brothers. I love being goofy, playing games, and having a good time and am beyond excited for camp to start!

Dennis Clutter

Hey y’all! I’m Dennis Clutter, and this is my first summer at Sanborn! I’m from Houston, TX but currently live in New Orleans, LA where I study Environmental Biology at Tulane University. I currently play on Tulane’s water polo team and help lead outdoor trips through the university’s recreation center. I love studying different ecosystems and figuring out how different plants and animals interact with each other, and I’m definitely looking forward to spending a summer outside of the SE United States and getting to live in a mountain ecosystem for the first time. I love backpacking, fishing, and biking around and exploring New Orleans. Additionally, I’m a big proponent of outdoor education and believe it offers a unique opportunity for growth and development that other settings can’t. Even though camp is 8700 ft above sea level, I’ll be traveling 8708 ft up to get there since New Orleans is 8 feet below sea level! Since graduating in June 2017 I have been living outside as much as possible, southbound thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail and working at the High Mountain Institute, a semester school in Leadville, CO. We work with high school juniors both in the classroom (I teach science) and on three two-week expeditions to the Sawatch Range and the canyons of Utah. My favorite campfire snack is bread on a stick: bread dough wrapped around a stick, which is cooked over the fire, then stuffed with chocolate before eating. Hopefully I have the honor of bringing this snack to Big Spring if it has not already been established already. I am so thrilled to lead backpacking and biking trips around 14ers, climb them too, tube down rivers, and camp among the aspens this summer at Big Spring Ranch!

Thomas Goodman

Hi! My name is Thomas, and this will be my first summer at Sanborn! I graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a degree in Ecology, and currently am back in school to get a second degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership at Colorado Mountain College in Leadville, Colorado. While in school in Knoxville, I was introduced to rock climbing and backpacking, and spent as much time exploring the mountains bordering Tennessee and North Carolina as possible. I moved to Colorado in the summer of 2015, and began checking off 14ers as soon as possible! I love being in the mountains, and especially doing 4th class scrambling or 5th class climbing. I work as a ski instructor in the winter, and am looking forward to bringing my passion for the outdoors to camp this summer! I just recently wrapped up a long, but fun month of canyoneering in Zion National Park, sea kayak touring in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington, acquiring my Wilderness First Responder certification, and a 3-day trad climbing trip! I can’t wait to begin working all the exciting programs this summer and seeing the campers go through incredible experiences that will last a lifetime!

Jason Marquardt

Hey Guys! My name is Jason Marquardt and I am from Mokena, IL. This will be my first summer at Sanborn and I am beyond stoked to be spending time outside and sharing my passion for the outdoors with others. In the fall, I’ll be attending Brevard College in North Carolina to pursue a degree in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education. As long as I can remember, I’ve spent time outside, whether it be fly fishing, mountain biking or backpacking. Illinois is not the most geographically interesting place but I’ve spent time all over the Midwest and the Appalachians and I’m super excited to spend some time in Colorado this summer. I’m looking forward to this summer and the memories I’ll be making.

Ruben Ramirez-Castillo

Hey, what’s up, hello!! I’m Ruben, counselor for Wetterhorn 2. I grew up here in CO, and love all this amazing state has to offer. I have a passion and love for photography and image making, and love going out to shoot. This is my first year at camp, and I’m really excited to go on adventures with my campers. I also can’t wait to get better at working with and riding horses this summer. I love EDM, lollipops, burgundy colored hair, my best friends, and wing Wednesdays. I have a cat named Shark and another littler cat named Phoebe. Adventure is out there, and I’m off to find it.

Kody Maynard

Howdy! I’m Kody and I’ll be splattering paint, throwing clay, and crafting up a storm in Big Deal Hall at Big Spring this summer. This is my first summer at camp, but I have enjoyed bringing groups of students to camp from my school in Colorado Springs over the last several years. I live a life full of laughing, acting, directing and teaching theater to middle and high school students. Last summer I traveled all over the country, and I am excited to spend this summer crafting and creating all sorts of art with campers from all over the world!
