JUNIPER WEST

Abby Smalley (right)

Howdy friends, my name is Abby, this my first summer at Sanborn, and I could not be more excited!! I am about to enter my senior year (ah, scary!) at St. Lawrence University where I am studying psychology. When I’m not hitting the books, I like to try different food combinations, which often results in my housemates saying “ew”. My favorite creation is rice topped with three cheese blend (unmelted) with so much Sriracha that you can barely see what’s underneath. I also enjoy singing/rapping songs from Hamilton and would love challenge anyone to a rap battle at camp. I’m so excited to do all things outdoors, eat lots of s’mores, and meet all of you this summer!

Anna Francis (left)

Hi everyone! My name is Anna Francis and this is my second summer at High Trails. I am originally from Ohio but I recently made the big move to Texas. I recently transferred to Texas Woman’s University where I study Child Development. When I am not working or studying you can usually find me doing yoga, trying to pet stray cats, or reading a lot of Stephen King. I am so excited to be back in my favorite place, exploring the great outdoors!

I am absolutely ecstatic for this summer and all the adventures it will bring! I can’t wait to go hiking, camping and horseback riding! The countdown has begun and each day my excitement is growing! Can’t wait to meet you!

I go to Western Washington University in the good ole’ WA state. I am studying Education, Geology, and Space Science. Hello hello! My name is Natalie Roberts and this will be my first summer at Sanborn. I am originally from Denver but I currently live in Salt Lake City, where I attend the University of Utah. I am studying biological anthropology and integrative human biology in hopes of working in the health field. I love living in Salt Lake because the mountains are right in my back yard and I am just a short drive from the desert. Aside from school I like to spend my time rock climbing in the mountains and backpacking through the wilderness, but when combating the cold winters I like to drink coffee and do puzzles. This summer I look forward to making new friends, going on crazy adventures, and enjoying the beautiful outdoors. I cannot wait to return to my beautiful home state of Colorado to play outside and enjoy the sweet Rocky Mountain air.

Alexa Sorman (middle)

Hello my fellow adventurers! My name is Alexa, and this will be my very first summer at Sanborn. I need to contain my excitement until I get to camp, or else my face will freeze with a giant, goofy smile spread from ear to ear! In the meantime, I am attending Germanna Community College in Virginia, where I study Biology and other areas of science. I also love taking pictures of nature and people’s bright, smiley faces! If you catch me looking at a tree or some plants for too long, don’t be alarmed; I am just soaking in the beauty, because I love nature and all it has to offer. As much as I love nature, photography, and art, I hold a special place in my heart for hiking and mac and cheese. I am super excited to meet everyone, as well as get to know each other better! I cannot wait to sit around a campfire, sing camp songs, exchange stories, and help toast marshmallows. Bring your graphic tees and silly hats; I am so excited to dress up and dance my heart out in my goofy apparel, so don’t be afraid to get silly (I will challenge you to goof-off)! Camp has always been a place where I achieved the best memories, so I will do my best to make Sanborn feel like a second home for everyone, as well as show all the great things that camp has to offer! Get excited, it is going to be a fun-packed, adventure-seeking, fabulous, goofy, and overall amazing summer, and I couldn’t be happier to share it with you all.

I grew up in Kansas City, and I am studying social work and political science at the University of Arkansas. My school is right in the heart of the Ozarks, which is filled with beautiful lakes and very old, tiny mountains that I love to explore. My two favorite people (yes, people) are my dogs Lucy and Charlie. Besides my love for my dogs, I love to read, walk aimlessly around Target, and travel. My absolute favorite things about camp are singing songs at lunch and meeting so many cool people. I am so psyched to come back this summer and hike, canoe, and get some dirt between my toes!!!

Bryn Johnson (left)

Hello! My name is Bryn and this is my very first summer at Sanborn, although not my first summer at camp! I’ve spent some of my life in Minnesota but the majority of my life in good old Wisconsin (Yes, I love cheese). I am currently a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and am studying Human Development and Family Studies with a certificate in Global Health. Other than school, I enjoy spending my time hanging out with my amazing friends, making playlists I can jam to, reading a good book, or hammocking on Lake Mendota. A couple fun facts about me are that I’m a certified scuba diver and I prefer sweet over salty always! I have lots of experience with younger children from my five little cousins and from nannying every summer since I can remember. I’m most excited for campfire songs, s’mores, being in the mountains and, most importantly, meeting all of you! I can’t wait to meet all of you and get ready for the best summer yet!

Olivia Gingerich (right)

Hello! Olivia here. I couldn’t be more excited for my first summer at High Trials! I grew up in the flat plains of Illinois, but I’m a mountain girl at heart. Currently, I’m at the University of Tennessee studying architecture, although my favorite class is American Sign Language. Besides studying, I enjoy being around my friends, hiking in Arkansas, and going to local concerts! Stevie Loring (right)

Woohoo!! Hello! My name is Stevie Loring and this will be my first year as a camp counselor; however, I was a camper for 4 years. I am a Sophomore at Western Washington University (which yes is in Washington state, not Washington DC), and I am currently studying to be in the Recreation program, which consists of working in programs such as NOLS, the Peace Corps, and places like Sanborn. Here are some interesting facts about me :) I absolutely LOVE dancing; it is one of my ultimate favorite things to do. I really enjoy art-ing (especially doing hair wraps, color by numbers and tie dyeing). I have recently gotten into poipods which are colored lights on a string you flair around trying to make them look cool, and my sister (who will also be a camp counselor) and I adopted a dog over the summer which is one of the most awesome experiences! There is SO MUCH I am excited for at camp, but some of the most prominent things include horseback riding, mountain climbing, cabinside overnights, vespers, the art barn and just the overall welcoming community Sanborn has to offer. Looking forward to meeting everyone :)

Natalie Mongeau (middle)

Hi everyone! My name is Natalie and I can’t wait to meet you all! I am currently a student at the University of Montana in Missoula, but I was born and raised in Colorado Springs. I have (finally) decided on majoring in History Education with a minor in Wilderness Studies. This will be my first summer as an AC at High Trails, though I have been a camper at various summer camps including participating in a Sanborn program. I am completely in love with the Colorado mountains, so I am especially excited to be doing what I love in my happy place. Whether camping with my family, hiking with friends, or making lasting memories at summer camp, I am truly happiest outside. I believe in the magic of starlight, campfire s’mores, and the smell of trees. That essentially means that I am beyond excited to share a magical summer with all you beautiful, enthusiastic, powerful girls!

Hannah Lockwood (bottom right)

Hello Everyone! My name is Hannah Lockwood and this will not only be my first summer at Sanborn but my first summer in the US! I am from Adelaide, Australia where I graduated with a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education last year. Since graduating, I have been working as a relief teacher in schools. Aside from teaching, you can find me playing music, reading, and spending as much time as I can with the people in my life, including my 3 favourite ‘people’: my cats Crookshanks and Buu and my puppy Bea. I absolutely love trying new things and feel at home in the outdoors, whether I’m by the ocean or hiking a mountain. I’m over the moon to be joining the crew this year and meeting all the kids but especially doing it all in what looks like the most beautiful setting!

Isabel Vinson (top)

What’s up friends, my name is Isabel Vinson and this is my first summer at Sanborn. I just completed my second year of college at Texas State University, where I am majoring Health and Wellness Promotion and minoring in Recreational Administration. When I am not studying at a local coffee shop, I spend my time running, laughing, eating my weight in strawberries, or biking around San Marcos with my friends. Being from the Texas Hill Country, I grew up on rivers, state parks, and many different hills to hike. I have always had a deep admiration for the outdoors, and I realize what an amazing impact it can have on individuals. I am so excited to meet everyone this summer and cannot wait to create awesome memories with you all! This summer is going to be incredible!

Emily Barber (bottom left)

Hello!!! I’m Emily, and this is my first summer at High Trails as well as my first time in Colorado ever! I am so excited and lucky to be a part of such a wonderful camp this summer. I’m currently a junior at Indiana University and am majoring in Anthropology and Spanish. I hope to live and work in South America when I graduate, perhaps teaching English or working in under-served communities. In my free time I like to read, paint, rock climb, and hike. I love being outside in general–sometimes I like to just sit in the sun and admire my surroundings! I also enjoy gardening (I have a succulent garden that I’m very proud of!), cooking (pasta is my favorite), and speaking in Spanish to whomever is patient enough to converse with me. This summer I’m excited to summit some big mountains and eat s’mores that are maybe just a little on the charred side. I can’t wait to meet everyone and am looking forward to an amazing time in the Colorado sunshine!

Gretchen Meister (bottom right)

Hello, hello! My name is Gretchen Meister, but I have acquired many nicknames including Gretch, Gretchy, Mama G, GiGi, and Ginger. This will be my second summer at High Trails and I am ecstatic to be returning as a counselor! I am originally from Annapolis, Maryland, just outside of Baltimore and Washington DC, but I am attending school at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. I am applying to the Nursing program with the hopes of becoming a flight nurse when I commission from the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at UW. I spend most of my time weightlifting at Half Acre gym, hiking and camping in Medicine Bow National Forest, and skiing all over Wyoming and Colorado. I grew up camping, hiking, skiing, kayaking, riding horses, and exploring. Horses and puppers are my true loves, besides kiddos! Keep an eye out for me down at the barn, nesting in my Eno, or stealing cookies from the bakery! I am beyond pumped to see all of the returning staff and campers, as well as to meet new peeps! I’m ready to return to my second home in Florissant, and I can’t wait to make more incredible memories this summer!

Meghan Leonard (bottom left)

Heya everyone! My name is Meghan and I’m so excited to meet each and every one of you and to spend the best summer ever together. This will be my first summer here at Sanborn, and I can’t begin to explain how blessed I feel to have this opportunity. I live in Toledo, Ohio where I attend the University of Toledo. I’m currently a psychology major who is minoring in counseling, and I’m hoping to move forward and get a masters in school counseling… I would love to be able to help school-aged children with any problem they’re struggling with.

A couple of fun facts about me are:

  1. I love geeking out with my friends and playing Dungeons and Dragons. Role playing games like that are my favorite and I would love to be able to kind of incorporate the kind of theme D&D has in camp activities!

  2. My step family is from Australia, where I recently just visited. My dad and step mom are planning to move to Sydney in the near future so I’ll be able to go and eat some great fish and chips as well as snuggle some kangaroos (which I’ve seen in the wild)… if they’ll let me, that is.

  3. My uncle is a director and my father is a professional musician and recording producer. I’ve been exposed to so many cool things growing up, and I’d like to think that fosters some type of creativity in me.

  4. I’m in a band called Secondhand Love Cuffs where I play bass and sing vocals. The guys I play with have become some of my closest friends whom I love dearly, and I’ve been able to meet so many cool people through the local Toledo music scene.

I’m excited to experience living out in the wilderness and to share my excitement and enthusiasm with both staff and campers. I live in a big city where there’s barely anything like what I’ve seen in pictures of camp, and it’ll be nice to submerge myself in that environment while meeting people who share my passion for the outdoors.

Taylor Crossen (top)

Hi everyone! My name is Taylor Crossen and this will be my 8th summer at camp but my first summer on staff! I am originally from California, but I am currently a student at the University of Colorado studying elementary education. As you might have guessed by my major I love spending time with kids and CANNOT wait for all the fun dance parties, messy arts and crafts, sticky s’mores, and of course the great adventures!

Hi boys and gals! I’m Madeline Sappenfield, and I’m from a small town called Greencastle in Indiana! This is my first time being at camp and being in Colorado in general! I will be starting my junior year this fall at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. I’m currently studying International Studies, which consists of mostly anthropology and other humanity-based studies, along with a minor in Environmental Science. I love to work with people of different ages and cultures and learn about their traditions, but I also like to get my hands dirty within the environment. I absolutely love creating art, especially painting. Photography and I get along pretty well, mostly because I love to capture any and every moment. I believe there is art in everything; therefore I look for it everywhere I go! When I’m not listening to music or studying, I’m hanging out with my Chi Omega sorority sisters! I’m most excited to climb our mountains together this summer and share our secret talents/hobbies. There’s so much to learn and see, and I can’t wait to experience it with you all! Cheers!

I was raised a Harry Potter nerd and remain the same today. In High School I played volleyball pretty seriously and took a tremendous number of photography classes (which is now one of my majors). I can’t wait to meet you all and have an awesome summer at camp!

I currently attend the University of Tulsa as a biology-premed major (nature and animals are my passion). Some fun facts about me: I’m really good at pogo-sticking and can do it with no hands. I also absolutely love chocolate and will pretty much eat it in everything, along with Chick-Fil-A sauce. I graduated high school in the spring of 2017 and attended a NOLS course in New Zealand during the following fall semester. In New Zealand, I studied wilderness medicine and spent 80 days in the outdoors backpacking, canoeing and sea kayaking. I love camping and living outside! The outdoors and our earth is everything to me. I love feeling connected to myself, others, and the infinite world. This summer I am very excited to work with Sanborn’s unique and amazing campers. Helping others grow, learn, and discover is something I really look forward to taking a part in. My motivation is happiness, and I can’t wait to spread happiness and reflect that with others around camp!

Carly Bennett (bottom left)

Hello fellow friends! My name is Carly Bennett, and this will be my first summer at Sanborn as an Assistant Counselor. If the paper chain in my room counting down the days until camp isn’t any indication, I could not be more excited! I grew up in Colorado and have loved the outdoors my entire life. I am currently finishing up my freshman year at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where I’m studying psychology, with minors in Spanish and philosophy. Outside of all that schoolwork, I love skiing, rock climbing, hiking, running, looking at the flatirons, and just about all of the other ways to enjoy the beautiful place I get to call home! I also love to swing and salsa dance, so I am hoping to find some campers who are ready to put their triple-stepping Charleston shoes on! I am incredibly excited to share some silly moments, fun, and laughter with everyone, while showing the outdoors what us girls are made of! I am also looking forward to work on my singing skills by the campfire and hopefully finally learning to snap and whistle.

Joy Seward (right)

Hello! My name is Joy Seward, born and raised in my beautiful home state of North Carolina. My heart skips a beat at wild animals and washing my hair in waterfalls. As for life right now, I am finishing up my junior year at East Carolina University, studying interpersonal communications. A week in my life consists of working and attending classes in Greenville NC, coaching rock climbing, training horses, and traveling wherever/whenever I can. I enjoy photographing adventures, places, and beautiful things. I’ve always been the wild child running around with a camera in her hand. I’m also the gal that will laugh at every bad pun, dance whenever music is playing, and sing all the wrong notes while doing so. This will be my first summer at Sanborn and I dream about it every day! I can’t wait to be outside every day, unplugged from my electronics, and be with campers that make my day, every day.

Some fun facts about me:

  1. I was home-schooled with my three siblings on a sweet little farm filled with chickens, goats, cats, and horses.
  2. Horses are my spirit animal.
  3. If I had to describe my personality I would say that I am “enthusiastic, creative, and a sociable free spirit who can always find a reason to smile.”
  4. I love the Summer Olympics! During the summer of 2016 I worked for the Brazil Eventing Equestrian Team and helped my trainer go to the Olympics.

McKenna Daily (middle)

Hi! My name is McKenna Daily. I was a camper from the age of seven all the way through to my JC year during the summer of 2015! As a JC my girls were in Columbine East; now as an AC, I have the same cabinside and couldn’t be more excited about it! Summers at Sanborn have been the highlight of my year as long as I can remember, and I can’t wait to get to be here both sessions as an AC. This past year, I took a gap year instead of going straight to Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR (where I’ll be this Fall). I lived in a small town in Northern Ecuador with a phenomenal host family, and I worked at a community center for the elderly. I had the time of my life learning Spanish, traveling, and immersing in my new home, but I couldn’t stop dreaming about the CO mountains all year. While I’m excited about every aspect of being an AC, I am most excited about meeting my girls and making sure they have the best summer possible. All my best, McKenna

In Minnesota this usually means canoeing or going on very flat hikes. A couple of fun facts about me are that I did data informatics for the World Health Organization this winter while studying in Copenhagen, and my true aspiration in life is to see a wild kangaroo. I also do research in the psych labs and am currently building a robot that will chase my professor around campus (but don’t worry, he’s in on the joke….mostly). Before college, I traveled around the world working on wildlife sanctuaries, raising lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, pumas, hyenas, and more. I also led horseback riding treks along South Africa’s wild coast, and have trained in eventing, dressage, hunter equitation, polo, cross country, and endurance riding. I’m excited to get to know the whole Sanborn community- horses included!

Emily Holt (right)

Hi everyone! My name is Emily and this summer will be my second summer at High Trails! I am from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and am going to be a junior at St. Lawrence University where I am studying Geology with a minor in Outdoor Studies. When it isn’t below freezing here, I enjoy hiking, going on runs, and identifying different types of rocks! Not only do I think rocks are super coo,l but I also love climbing them and can’t wait to share this passion with others. I am so excited to be back at High Trails and can’t wait to see some familiar faces as well as some new ones!!

George Behnam (middle)

Hello everyone! My name is Georgina Behnam (or George) and I am so excited to be returning to Sanborn as an Assistant Counselor after being a camper for five years. I am from San Francisco, CA and just finished my first year at Gettysburg College, a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania. I plan on majoring in philosophy with minors in business and sociology. I love to sing, do yoga, and take solo walks (sometimes all at the same time and sometimes pondering philosophical concepts). I am an avid thrift shopper, adventure eater, and people watcher back home in San Francisco. This summer I am so excited about getting back up on some 14ers, trying out and creating some new backcountry cuisine, and mountain biking.

ASPEN

Cass Rhodes (upper left)

Hello friends! My name is Cass Rhodes, and this will be my second summer on staff at High Trails! My last summer was in 2016 and I was a counselor for Kinnikinnik, so I am very eager and excited to come back! I am going into my senior year at Colorado State University as an English Education student (AKA I want to teach (don’t worry, I won’t treat you like a student at camp))!

Some of my passions include: Hiking - Anywhere really! I prefer a dense forest, but I’ll take what I can get. Skiing - My favorite resort I’ve been to is Vail, but I really want to go to Jackson Hole next season. Photography - Something I’ve been interested in from a young age, and helps me view/ interpret the world in unique ways. Music - If you want to see me cry/ get overwhelmed…let’s talk music. And last but not least, Reading/Writing - I hope to read a solid amount this summer. I’m studying English, so I spend a lot of time in a book/ in my journal.

I can’t wait to continue exploring beautiful, colorful Colorado this summer with all of our lovely Sanborn campers this summer! Get ready to get silly, excited, and wondrous!

See you all soon! :)

Stephanie Barbier (middle)

Kia Ora,

My name is Stephanie and this will be my first time at High Trails AND my first time in America.

I’m from New Zealand and studied Outdoor Education. I currently work full time as the Outdoors Programme Coordinator for a not-for-profit in Christchurch called Youthtown. I am lucky enough to be able to take a working holiday this year and I am very excited to see Colorado, learn new things, meet you all and create some epic memories.

Fun facts about me; I like to bake but never follow the recipe… Sometimes this is genius, and sometimes it is very bad. I grew up in a country where there are four sheep to every one human - it’s Baaaaaalistic! Slacklining is my newest skill; come and find me if you want to learn some new tricks OR if you have some of your own that you can teach me.

See YOU at CAMP!

Savannah Johnson (upper right)

Hello outdoor enthusiasts! I’m Savannah Johnson and this will be my first year at Sanborn although I am not new to summer camp in general! I am from Northern California, and for the past 13 years I have been going to a Girl Scout camp called Butano Creek. I have been a camp counselor there every summer since I was fifteen, and I am super excited to become part of a new camp family! I currently reside in Fort Collins, CO and am studying Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in Early Childhood Professions at Colorado State. I would love to go on to graduate school and get my Masters degree in Education. Working with kids and studying child development is a huge passion of mine. Outside of school, I love to practice my photography skills in the great outdoors! I also like to ski/shred the gnar up on the slopes. I love a good book and I feel that you can learn a lot about someone from their favorite book (mine is Harry Potter, of course). Some fun facts about me:

  1. My favorite/spirit animal is a humpback whale
  2. I’m a total choir nerd
  3. My favorite song of all time is “Island in the Sun” by Weezer. It never fails to cheer me up, and I believe it has magical powers. I am super excited to have an awesome summer at Sanborn, and I am looking forward to meeting new friends!

RIDGE LEADERS

Anna Middleton (second from left)

Hi! My name is Anna and this will be my second summer as the Ridge Leader for the Juniors at High Trails! I was born and raised in Big Sky, Montana, but now spend most of my time in Walla Walla, Washington, where I am finishing up my last semester at Whitman College majoring in Rhetoric Studies. I am a skier, rafter, animal enthusiast, and aspiring extreme hammocker. I am also a proponent of formal wear for outdoor activities. I am so excited to spend my summer hanging with the coolest girls around, refining my inner-tubing techniques on the River All Day, and splitting rocks at the fossil beds. My goals for this summer include eating too many s’mores, finding 1 million crystals at the crystal beds, becoming a Ga-Ga champion, and getting zero sunburns. I can’t wait to meet you!

Kelly Ahman (right)

Hey all! I’m Kelly and this will be my third summer at High Trails. I grew up in Lima, Ohio and attended the University of South Carolina, where I earned my degree in Sociology and Anthropology. Now I am blessed to call Colorado my new home! I spent this past year working a few seasonal jobs, mainly at Keystone Resort and here at High Trails Outdoor Education Center. I was thrilled to extend my time at HT by instructing this past spring for HTOEC and could not have asked for a more amazing season teaching kiddos. In my free time I love running relay races with my family and climbing Colorado’s finest 14ers. I cannot wait to spend another summer exploring the out of doors with the best co-workers and kids around!

Emily Burnham (second from right)

Hi hi hi! My name is Emily, but I’m formally known as Edna here at camp. I am so grateful to be at Sanborn for my tenth summer (7 of which were spent as a camper, 3 on staff!). Being at camp is truly the best part of the year, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you. Though I’m originally from the Chicago area, I’m currently a junior at Colorado College, studying sociology, environmental issues, and dance. Most days, you can probably find me trying to do homework outside, going to too many dance classes, eating a lot of pasta, and staring up at Pikes Peak trying to figure out how it’s so pretty. I’m so very excited to climb mountains, have giant dance parties, look at the stars, and sing at the top of my lungs!!!

Megan Blackburn (left)

Hi! My name is Megan Blackburn, and this will be my fifth summer on staff at High Trails. I graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Dietetics and Human Nutrition, which leads me to a couple of fun facts about myself. 1) I love food, especially ice cream and pizza; 2) my spirit animal is a happy gremlin; 3) I am always ready to laugh at some dad jokes and/or puns. What I am most excited for this summer is MOUNTAIN BIKING!! It is my favorite activity at camp.

WRANGLERS

Lindsey Rushmeyer (front right)

Hello! My name is Lindsey Rushmeyer. This will be my first summer at High Trails, and I am looking forward to working as a Wrangler! I was lucky enough to call the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Ely, Minnesota home for 3 years and that is where I achieved my A.A.S degree in Wilderness Law Enforcement. After that, I traveled out to Montana to work as a Wildland Firefighter and assisted on cattle drives with local ranchers. For the last 2 years I have been in Crookston, Minnesota, where I will graduate with my Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resource Management in May. When not in school, you can find me taking care of livestock or in the backcountry eating too many s’mores and rocking a crazy pair of Crocs. I have loved living in different ecosystems - working as a backcountry canoe guide in the BWCA all the way to working on a hog farm. The outdoors have always been a huge part of my life, along with many summers spent at horse camps, and I am excited to share what I have learned, along with learning new things. I have a huge passion for teaching others about Mother Nature, along with always finding time for singing and dancing! Oh, and snacking. I am excited for a summer spent on horseback and getting to know everyone!

Sarah Slusher (back center)

Hi, my name is Sarah Slusher. I’ve worked with the horses at Sanborn for a little over a year. I grew up training and riding horses, I have an animal science degree, and I worked in a veterinary hospital for ten years. I own a wonderful yellow lab-golden retriever mix named Odin. I’m excited to meet all the campers this summer and to work mainly with the juniors.

Bri Roat (front left)

This will be my third summer at camp! I’ve been living & working at Sanborn as a part of the year-round staff this past year. I grew up riding English and competing at horse shows, but fell in love with Western riding ever since my first summer at Sanborn. I went to Thailand for 3 weeks this past March and had the opportunity to hike through the jungle and bathe in a river. I can’t wait to meet all of the new campers and catch up with any familiar faces!

Alex Oberg (front on ground)

Hiya! My name is Alex Oberg and this will be my second year on staff and fourth summer at Sanborn. I hail from the lovely Mile High City; however, I currently reside in Charlottesville, VA, where I attend the University of Virginia (Wahoowa) and study Foreign Affairs and Economics with a concentration in International Economics. Following the completion of my degree, I will be moving to the nation’s capital and pursuing real world adventures. Some fun facts about me are that I am a nationally ranked freestyle skier, I love to travel and have been to a twenty seven different countries, and I think my vocation is to be a professional hobby horse-r/horse-ist/horse rider. I can’t wait to see all the campers! Make sure to pack a Hawaiian shirt because Aloha Friday is my favorite day of the week!

Anna Elder (back right)

Heyy. My name’s Anna Elder. I’ve been a camper for 8 years and this will be my 2nd year on staff as a wrangler. I go to school at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri; it’s a small town, so don’t be worried if you never heard of it. I’m currently studying Business Marketing and Leadership, which is a self-designed major. I usually try to win 1st place in Mario Kart, go on long walks when it’s not raining in spring, and hang out with friends and with all my friends’ pets. A few fun facts about me are that I’m a mother for 2 cats, and I’m always finding new music to listen to. If you need a dance partner at the dances, come find me and we can jump around until our legs fall off. What I’m most excited about this summer is getting to meet all of you campers and going on horse adventures.

Katelyn Faubel (back second from right)

Hello? Hi! My name is Katelyn and I will be a part of the awesome wrangler team this summer! This is my second summer at camp (I was a riding counselor before), and I will soon be a graduate of Syracuse University. It can’t come fast enough because I’m so excited to start another great summer at camp! I’m studying newspaper and online journalism as well as international relations in the snowiest college in the U.S., but I’m originally from the glorious desert of the southwest. I love riding horses and seeing the community that can grow and lessons that can be learned around these cool beasts. A couple of fun facts about myself are: I have a twin sister and we don’t know for sure if we’re identical or not; and I studied abroad in Amman, Jordan for a semester and loved learning the language and culture!

Charity Robinett (back left)

Hey everyone! My name is Charity, and this will be my first summer at Sanborn! Previously, I worked at a different summer camp for four years as barn staff, and I can’t wait to transfer the skills I learned there to this camp! This fall I will be a senior in Animal Science at NC State University. Although this will only be my second time in Colorado, I’m THRILLED to spend a whole summer there and meet all of you wonderful campers! When I’m not studying, I love to play on my school’s Ultimate Frisbee team, wear Chacos, eat too much dessert, play board games, and go on adventures. I can’t wait for a summer filled with all my favorite things: horses, campers, and the great outdoors!

Rachel Byrne (back second from left)

Hello! My name is Rachel Byrne and I am so excited for my first summer at High Trails! Outside of camp, I’m a student at North Dakota State University and this fall I will receive my degree in Secondary English Education. At school I’m captain of the Equestrian Team and a member of a service organization called Blue Key. My hobbies include cooking, working out, riding horses, and reading psychological thrillers (when I’m not reading for school, that is). I am so excited to be a Wrangler this summer, and to get to know new kids, new horses, and new people! Summer camp is one of my favorite places to be, and I can’t wait to eat s’mores around a fire in the mountains!

KAHUNAS

Claire Collins (second from right)

Hello all! My name is Claire Collins and this will be my 3rd summer at High Trails. I graduated from Harvard a year ago and now live in Boston, MA where I work at an elementary school. When I’m not working you can find me sampling every ice cream shop in the greater Boston area, making dinner with my friends, or playing rugby. I am most excited to go hiking in the mountains of Colorado and eat too many s’mores this summer. I cannot wait for the campers to arrive!

Anna Wiegand (left)

My name is Anna Wiegand, and I am the Arts and Crafts Coordinator! I came to Sanborn for the first time in 2016 as a counselor, and I am super excited to be back for a second summer. I’ve been living in Indianapolis after graduating from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. I interned briefly with a refugee resettlement group and then worked as a Legislative Assistant for the Indiana House of Representatives. I’m ready to do some tie dye, eat toasted marshmallows, and sing John Denver as loudly as I want. I can’t wait to meet everyone and see what creative ideas you want to make happen at camp this year!

Hailey Gelzer (second from left)

Hey Hi! My name is Hailey Gelzer and this will be my third year on staff at Sanborn. I am currently a senior at Montana State University studying conservation biology and ecology. I grew up in Virginia but spent my high school years in Colorado, so I am very excited to explore the beautiful outdoors of Colorado again. I took some time off school last semester to raft the Grand Canyon and did some traveling around Indonesia and the Philippines. I love experiential learning and find so much value in connecting with others of all ages and backgrounds in the outdoors. I am excited to share my love of the nature with everyone in the beautiful Sanborn community this summer!

Nell Davis (right)

I recently finished my Masters in Natural Resources and certificate in Environmental Education at University of Idaho, after graduating from Williams College in 2015 as a Geology and Art History double major. I grew up in Vermont, and I have always loved being outdoors, especially when hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross country skiing.
