Every child should have mudpies, grasshoppers, wildflowers, aspen trees, blue sky, soaring birds, fuzzy squirrels, huge rocks, butterflies, pine cones, wild strawberries, and room to run in - and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of education.

Thinking of Summer in January

If you’re anything like us here at camp, the January chill has started to get a little bit old. Of course, there are lots of fun ways to get outside in the winter, and trust us, we’ve been skiing, sledding, and loving the way the heavy snow collects on pine needles or settles in drifts in Potts Meadow.

But this week, we’ve gotten a taste of what summer feels like — 40 and 50 degree days! Sun so bright we have to close the curtains to see our computer screens! Lots of opportunities to walk, bike, run, ride!

It’s making us all itch for summertime, for the blue-sky days that last into beautiful sunsets, for the mountain peaks whose trails seem to go on forever, and for the chance to empower campers to challenge themselves in ways they’ll never forget. Only a few more months (less than 136 days until First Session, if you’re counting) until “mudpies, grasshoppers, wildflowers, aspen trees, blue sky, soaring birds, fuzzy squirrels, huge rocks, butterflies, pine cones, wild strawberries, and room to run in.” We can’t wait to see you!

About Emily Burnham

Emily has worn a variety of hats here at Sanborn over the years. She began as a camper, then worked on staff for four summers while affectionately known as “Edna,” taught as an instructor at High Trails Outdoor Education Center, and now works as the Assistant Director for High Trails. Her favorite things about camp include eating liberal quantities of chippy dippy bars, singing a little bit too loudly at Vespers, and watching campers accomplish incredible feats. She recently graduated with a degree in sociology from Colorado College and now lives at camp, counting down the days until summer each year.
