Each summer I take a new adventure and discover new places, I enjoy traveling, and this summer I want to spend it doing what I really enjoy, being around children knowing I’ll be a role model, and sharing the love I have of being outdoors and nature! I’m definitely looking forward to go on hikes and get to know everyone be able to exchange some laughter and make new memories!

Hana Hellmers (right) This is my first time coming to camp.

GOLD HUT EAST

Erin Wallace (left) Hello! My name is Erin and I am from the rainy capital of Alaska, Juneau. This will be my first summer at camp and in Colorado. I am moving to Coloardo to finish my psychology degree at CMU but prior to all that I have been attending the University of Southeat Alaska in Juneau. While at UAS I was enrolled in the Outdoor Studies (ODS) program and just graduated the program this year. I loved being a part of this program and advancing in my outdoor skills. ODS grew my passion for adventure and helped me realize what it is I truly want to do with my life. Through my psychology degree and ODS, I eventually want to work as a wilderness therapist and spark the joy of adventure in others and help them see their potential. With that being said, a few fun facts about me have to do with the outdoors. I live about 2 miles away from a giant block of ice called a glacier and I have slept, skied and climbed on this said glacier. Also, I am a head/hand stand fanatic. I will do head stands wherever, on a mountian top, a canoe in the middle of a lake etc. Maybe I’ll even be seen doing a head stand on the back of a horse; haha. Speaking of horses, I am really looking foward to having the opportunity to ride a horse this summer along with so many other excitments. I’d say one of the things I am most excited about is creating meaningful relationships with the campers and hopefully inspire them to take chances and try new things. I am looking forward to a fun filled summer and spending time out in the sun!

Lilly Patton (middle) Hey guys I’m Lilly! This is going to be my first summer at camp and I am SO excited! I am currently taking a break from school and recently just moved! I can’t wait for all of the fun in store!

I’m super excited to go out to the mountains and the beautiful nature out at camp, and also to meet all of you coming down to join us! As an Assistant Counselor, this will be my first year on staff, but I’ve been a camper for six summers. I just finished my first year at Duke University in North Carolina, where I’m majoring in Biology and Animal Behavior! I love to ski, and I’m on my school’s club ski team, which is super ironic due to the lack of snow out in North Carolina, but when I’m back home you can find me shredding the slopes at my favorite resort, Breckenridge, or exploring backcountry out at Rabbit Ears Pass! Other than that, I love languages and I know Spanish and some Czech, and I’m hoping to also add Russian to that list as well next year. Also, I can’t do a handstand or a cartwheel, but I’m determined to learn so if any campers have any gymnastics skills, send them my way so I can walk on my hands by the end of camp! I’m so ready to meet you all and get out into nature this summer, whether that’s through a hike on camp property or climbing one of the many mountains in our beautiful state :).

Ally Patterson (middle) Hey, y’all!! I’m Ally and I come from the great state of Texas (and no, sadly, I do not own a horse). Currently, I am pursuing my B.S. in Environmental Science at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. This is my first time as a counselor at camp, but I attended the gap semester program with Sanborn the past spring where I learned about my love for rock climbing. I have an adventurous and spontaneous spirit that people say is hard to keep up with but extremely fun to be around (!!!). I am quite passionate about rock climbing and geology (which go perfectly together) and I am an avid swimmer (I was on the Lehigh club water polo team). hmm… Things I enjoy include running around in the rain, playing tennis with my dad, exploring anywhere and everywhere, going on muddy hikes, climbing until my whole body hurts, and laying in the grass (plus many more hobbies). Now for some interesting facts, I have a cat and dog named after places I’ve visited (Sitka and Quito, respectively) and a tortoise who lives in our backyard named Medium. I grew up running around and constantly being outside. This is why I am so delighted to share wonderful outdoor experiences with your kids, so they can pursue an outdoor life as well. :))))) SOOO HYPED!!!

A few fun facts! I have 3 younger siblings, and we’re all almost exactly 2 years apart from each other. I love to travel – I spent the year after I graduated high school living and working in Dakar, Senegal, and have lived for various amounts of time in Morocco, Panama, and Mozambique. This summer I’m super excited to meet new people, go hiking, and spend tons of time outdoors!

Astrid Braun (front) “Hi! My name is Astrid, and I’m a Cleveland, OH native. This will be my first summer at camp, and I’m super excited to spend it with some great counselors and campers!

A bit about me: I’m technically a sophomore at the University of Chicago, but I took the winter and spring quarters off and did a NOLS semester in the southwest region of the United States. During the semester, we backpacked through two different wilderness areas in New Mexico and Arizona, canoed down the Rio Grande (just part of it, of course), and did some rock climbing! Most other trips I’ve done have been bikepacking trips, because that’s my family’s preferred mode of adventuring. I also love to sail, run, and play an assortment of sports (soccer and ultimate frisbee being two).

A bit more about me, in the form of fun facts:

  1. I have three younger siblings, we’re all two years apart, and the order is girl/boy/girl/boy, starting with me. Three out of the four of us were born in June.
  2. I love women’s soccer! I played up until college, and now I like playing when I can and watching when possible. I’m excited about the upcoming Olympic games, assuming they’ll still happen.
  3. I only recently found out that you can send library books to kindles (from an online library), and that has had a negative effect on my sleep, but a very positive effect on the number of books I’m able to read. I’ve also been working at a bookstore during May, which means about half of everything I make goes back into buying books. Whoops.”

RIDGE LEADERS

Abby Smalley (back left) Yay camp! I’m Abby and I’m beyond excited to be back for my 3rd summer! I graduated from St. Lawrence University in 2019 and have been working in various states and jobs since. I taught outdoor education here at Colorado Outdoor Education Center and ski instructed n Big Sky, MT. I just finished about a year of working as a guide for a wilderness therapy company in Utah where I got to see the healing and transformative power of nature for struggling teens. When I’m not working, I like to mountain bike and ski when there is snow on the ground! I am so thrilled to be back in my favorite place and meet everyone new and safely see old faces!

Leah Herring (back middle) Hellooo! My name is Leah and this will be my fourth summer at camp! Cara Mackesey (front left) Howdy everyone! My name is Cara Mackesey and I honestly think I am a little too excited to be spending my fifth summer at High Trials! Originally from Wisconsin, I earned my undergraduate degree in Recreation Management and Spanish at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. I recently moved to Boulder, Colorado to work towards a Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Colorado - Denver. While I have been in school myself, I have also been teaching kindergarten all year! It has been a blast, but I am stoked to transition to working in the out of doors all summer long! Mostly I’m looking forward to long trips, singing Taylor Swift on the trail, climbing as many mountains as possible, and seeing the JCs crush their last year at camp! Can’t wait!

Lauren Smith (front middle) Howdy! My name is Lauren Smith, and I cannot express enough how thankful I am to be part of Sanborn 2021. My first summer at Sanborn in 2018 inspired me to pursue a Master’s of Science in Recreation, Parks, and Sport Management. I am attending online school through Frostburg State University. A highlight of my 2018 camp experience was definitely climbing my first fourteener, Quandary Peak and since then I have summited 9 other mountains. I will miss my sweet dog and cat, Max and Mabel, but it will be worth it to be back in the gorgeous Rockies. The horses, dinner bell, art barn, and van trips are calling my name. There is so much to look forward to- can’t wait for camp to start!

Carly Liebich (right) Hi! My name is Carly but everyone calls me Carl. This is my 3rd summer at Sanborn and I am so excited to be back with all of my favorite mountain mammas. I just graduated from Wake Forest University with my Master’s in Business Management where I also went for undergrad and studied political science. I cannot wait to spend a summer in the outdoors. Some of my favorite things include Taylor Swift, sleeping outside, hanging out with friends and camp! I am looking forward to climbing mountains, playing games, dances, and maybe going to the river. Can’t wait to meet and see all of you so soon!

Emma Greenberg (left) Hey! My name is Emma, and I’m going to be a wrangler this summer! I am so excited to get outside and spend some time with you all & some good horses! This will be my second year on staff, and my 8th year at Sanborn. I recently graduated from Whitman College with an Environmental Art degree. I’ve spent most of my time this year photographing trees, and I love any kind of arts and crafts. I also love music and am really looking forward to some new song recs from you all. I’m already hard at work curating a barn playlist for this summer. I’m so ready to get out on the trails and up in the mountains again. I’m ready to sleep under a full sky of stars and sing together at vespers! I can’t wait to see you all!

Eva Crossman (second from left) My name is Eva Crossman and I recently graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Agricultural Economics. This is my first year at Sanborn and I’m very excited! Outside of school you can often find me working with horses or playing with my dog. Pre-COVID I was a pretty avid traveler and I’m looking forward to hopefully getting beck to that this next year. While at camp this summer, I’m excited to see the Colorado mountains and hopefully meet some new friends.

Taylor Indrebo (second from right) I’m Taylor. Four summers here at camp, more or less. I went to school in Santa Rosa, California and also went to Western State here in Colorado. Got myself a degree in Equine Science and a degree in Recreation and Outdoor Education w/ an Emphasis in Outdoor Leadership. I’ve been here at camp this last year, helping to tend our herd of Sanborn horses. Love me some horses! Can’t wait for our bustling camp community to return and to get lots of company down at the barn. Especially looking forward to all the fun of getting out on some trail rides and horse packing trips with y’all! Got my boots on, lets ride!

Annie McDevitt (right) Howdy Everyone!

My name is Annie, I am from Wilton, Connecticut, and this will be my 5th summer working at Sanborn! I graduated from St. Lawrence University in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and I am currently working on getting my master’s degree in school counseling at St. Bonaventure University Online. For the past few years, I have been working in the early childhood education field and have primarily worked with one and two-year-olds. They have taught me all about the importance of patience and embracing a sense of wonder! A fun fact about me is that I was a High Trails camper for 4 summers! I also have a black lab mix named Missi Mae and we volunteer for the therapy animal organization, Pet Partners! I am so excited to return to the Sanborn community for another amazing summer full of horses, fun, and adventure! Yee Haw!

KAHUNAS

Baila Neuhauser, Kitchen Coordinator (left) Hi! I’m Baila, and this is my first year at Sanborn. I’ve been working seasonally volunteering on farms and working in a boarding school. I love spending time outdoors in my hammock, reading a good book, or hiking and listening to the birds. I love music and spontaneous dance parties. I’m collecting quarters for all 50 states, and the quarters about on the National Parks because it’s so awesome that we have such artsy currency. I’m super excited to explore beautiful Colorado with like-minded and empowered girls and women. I’m looking forward in getting to know people from so many different areas and backgrounds and stories, and making magic together this summer.

Callie Donaldson (right) Hey y’all, my name is Callie, and this is my first summer at Sanborn! I moved across the country from Kentucky knowing only 2 people; so feeling homesick? I can empathize! I attended WKU and studied Outdoor Recreation Administration where I got to canoe for a class. In that class I surfed on a river in a canoe (google it!). I’m super pumped to use my love for organization and planning to prepare some awesome food for your trips this summer!!
