Pancho Almanzar (right)

I was born in New Mexico and Raised in Tucson. I got the opportunity to go to camp on a scholarship when I was 13 and I have loved it since. My main goal this summer is to give back to the community I love.

Joey Juma (left)

My name is Joseph (Joey) Juma and this is going to be my first summer with Sanborn! I am currently an undergraduate student at Purdue University studying civil engineering with plans to focus on architecture. I am originally from Los Angeles, CA, where my love for the outdoors started. I love going to the beach or into the mountains on hikes with my family. In my free time I love going for runs, playing volleyball, and watching movies with my friends. One fun fact about me is that rowed collegiately during my freshman year. This summer I am so excited to learn the new environment and to meet everyone!

Dom Haegele (center)

Hi! My name is technically Seth, but I go by my middle name, Dom! This will be my first summer at camp and I can’t wait to experience it all for the first time! I attended college at Ivy Tech, a community college in my current home of Evansville. I did an accelerated program to graduate within a year with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences ( which I still get nightmares about ) but I am glad I stuck it through! Now I’m taking a bit of a break before diving into a career and just enjoying life trying to discover more about the world as well as myself! I’m a big nerd and know too much about Pokemon, probably more than any of my schooling ( at least this eased my nightmares of endless classes ). I also enjoy geocaching as it always feels like an adventure no matter where I am! I’m sure my time of camp will feel just like it and I can’t wait!

Ben Blake (photo coming soon)

Hello, My name is Ben Blake. This is my first year at Sanborn. I graduated from Pikes Peak Community College with an Associates in General Studies (I didn’t know what I wanted to do). I am a huge metalhead, and can do screaming/deathcore vocals. I am still trying to learn guitar and ukulele (I know, not very metal). I love board games and video games, and good movies. I am also a huge Marvel fan. I am excited to meet new people, and doing all of the fun activities there.

Massive

Dante Valentino (far right)

Hi, I’m Dante Valentino and this will be my first year being an assistant counselor at Big Spring! Right now, I’m studying Art Education at IUPUI in Indianapolis, Indiana. I love singing the most random assortments of songs, working out, hanging out friends, taking walks, and ultimately challenging myself while trying to keep a positive outlook. I was originally a camper at a sailing camp in my hometown (Bloomington, Indiana), and I loved it so much that I eventually became a camp counselor for 2 years. At Big Spring, I’m excited to fish, go on hikes, look at stars, and be away from civilization and technology!

Pepe Jogaib (far left)

Hey there, my name is Pedro Jogaib and I’m excited to be joining the team as a camp counselor this summer! This will be my first year at camp, and I can’t wait to be a part of such a fun and engaging community. I’m currently studying Communications at the University of South Florida in Tampa, and I’m also a member of the men’s volleyball club on campus. In my free time, I love to practice taekwondo, go to the beach, and skimboard. There’s something about the ocean that just feels so peaceful and rejuvenating, and I’m excited to share my love for nature and water sports with the campers this summer. One of the things that excite me most about camp is the opportunity to learn from the young and brilliant minds that we’ll have there. I believe that everyone has something valuable to offer, and I’m eager to hear what the campers have to say about their interests, hobbies, and ideas. I’m looking forward to learning from them just as much as I’m excited to teach and guide them. Lastly, I am passionate about photography and art, as it allows me to express myself in unique and creative ways. I love capturing moments that evoke emotions, and I enjoy experimenting with different techniques and styles. I’m hoping to incorporate some of these artistic elements into the activities and projects that we’ll be doing at camp and to encourage the campers to express themselves creatively as well. Overall, I can’t wait to be a part of this exciting adventure and to help create an unforgettable experience for all the campers this summer!

Jack Jackson (center right)

Howdy, I’m Jack also known as Jack Jack or JJ! I currently attend Appalachian State University in North Carolina, studying Recreation Management with a minor in Geography. My goal is to become a Park Ranger or Forestry Technician (fire lookout), in the Colorado/ Utah area. Being in North Carolina, I’ve never been to Big Spring camp, however I have gone to similar style camps here on the east coast, alongside several baseball, basketball, and tennis camps from age 5 through 17! For outdoors and recreational activities I love to play lacrosse, snowboard, skateboard, wakeboard, kayak, and paddle board, alongside trying to learn hockey last summer. Some fun facts about me is I can play guitar and percussion, I’m left handed, and I love to travel. Finally, I’m excited for camp to meet everyone and share my life goal with everyone. I want everyone to have the same excitement for something I do, so if we’re out hiking, I want everyone to have the same excitement and joy to camp, that I have. I feel like if I can make others have the same excitement, then I’ve done my job correctly!

Simon Christian (center left)

WASSUP! My name is Simon Christian and this will be my first summer at Sanborn Camps and I am more excited than I can explain! I am currently a Junior in the Geology program at Eastern Kentucky University. When I am not studying rocks I am out hiking with friends or reading somewhere wooded. I can do a pretty good cartwheel and a couple birdcalls including a morning dove. What I am most excited to do at camp…. probably ride horses, hike up some beautiful mountains, and generally just be in the beautiful Colorado wilderness.

Devon Parikh (center)

My name is Devon Parikh, and I’ve never actually been to summer camp officially. I go to Utah Valley University studying Theatre design and technology, and I’m a sophomore in college (technically). Despite me being a theatre major, I spent most of my life doing sports! If you can name an organized sport that was done in Utah ever over the last 15 years I’ve almost surely done it. The exceptions are golf and baseball, but I still love to play them! I was one of the kids that really just did everything, and I’ve got a small amount of experience in a ton of fields. I’m excited to get back outside into nature, and to give my campers the best experience they can possibly have this summer!

I was born and raised in a small town near Florence, took my first steps here, surrounded by nature growing alongside the beautiful Tuscan countryside. I studied in Florence to become a Landscape Architect. After graduating I wanted to discover new experiences. So, 5 years ago I finally listened to my heart and decided to revolutionize my life. I set out to discover myself with a backpack and a dream. I lived in various countries, Holland, Spain and France, ending up getting lost and also finding myself again, always with the intention of being the best version of myself. In these years of travel I always try to discover where my interests are and I realized that I love meeting people, knowing their stories, their sufferings and their dreams, and that is why I want to study Psychology. I’m also passionate about philosophy and sports. I always try to bring seriousness to the work I do, always trying to give 100%. I also try to convey positivity and sensitivity towards other people and I always try to create a healthy team spirit in order to achieve the objectives in the most genuine way.

Hi I’m Steve! I’m a first-time counselor at Sanborn, and excited to spend the summer outside this year. I was born and raised in the front range and have spent a lot of my life up in the mountains. I love all four seasons in Colorado, but wish that ski season lasted forever (especially with the snow we had this year). When the days are warm, I like to hike, climb, and scramble whenever I can. I am extremely excited to spend the summer adventuring with other nature enthusiasts this summer, and hope to expand my knowledge on native plants in the area.

Hi everyone my names Dre and this will be my first summer at Sanborn and I’m so excited! I currently go to school at Penn State where my major is Agricultural Science. I really enjoy learning, cooking, and growing all sorts of food and desire to help make our food system more sustainable and more equitable for everyone. Everyone’s gotta eat! Although I’ve never been to Sanborn, growing up I spent a summer at Camp Ockanickon in Medford, NJ. As someone that had just moved to the area and won a scholarship to go to camp, I can attest to just how awesome camp can be! That first summer camp experience was amazing and years later throughout high school its what motivated me to be a counselor at a few different camps and what has motivated me to come to Sanborn. Before going back to school I spent a few years in the Navy and lived and worked on submarines for 5 years. A one-of-a-kind experience that I surely won’t forget and can be heard talking about frequently. If I’m not working or in school I love biking and have been a fan of bike racing since high school, the Tour de France is practically a month long holiday in my eyes. A few other activities I get excited about are fishing, canoeing, and hiking. Lucky me, that sounds like camp! I look forward to building a new camp family and exploring the great outdoors with you this summer at Sanborn!

Hello everyone! My name is Tully and I’m from way up north in Anchorage, Alaska! Technically, this will be my 5th year on staff, but it’s been quite a few years since my last summer at camp because I’ve been teaching 5th grade for the last 4 years. Needless to say, I am ECSTATIC to be coming back to camp to spend another glorious summer with all of you! I earned my Bachelor degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alaska and have gained a ton of awesome experience in the classroom that I am excited to bring to camp this summer. Some fun facts about me are I still have a baby tooth because my adult tooth never grew in (I think it’s shy), I can do a REALLY good Yoshi impression, and I love singing (even though I don’t have the greatest voice- that doesn’t stop me!). I am so excited to just be back at camp, surrounded by nature and the most incredible people on the face of the Earth. I can’t wait to go hiking, rock climbing, and horseback riding. Woohoo!!

Dennis Young- Photographer (far left)

I’m Dennis. I grew up between Albany, Ga and Jacksonville, Fl. As a kid I was always creating games, playing make believe and running barefoot in the woods. I started my life as a young adult in the Marine Corps. When I’m not working or seeing massage clients you can find me at a fun beach location somewhere around the world. I value travel, adventure and self love above all else. I’m a writer, poet and fun addict. One thing I love to do when I get to spend time with kids is make them feel good about how they show up in the world. My favorite quote from my grandma is “Live life large cause one day you may have to live off your memories.”

Nurses

Chris McCarthy

My name is Chris Mccarthy, and this is my third summer at Sanborn Western camps, but my 13th summer working at a summer camp. I will be part of the health care team. I am very excited to be part of the community that camp creates no matter where you are or what year it is. Summer camp is magic. I am a graduate of both Purdue and Indiana university with a Masters degree in pediatric nursing. I have spent my entire adult life working with kids, and love their approach to life. I look forward to getting to know you all. The thing I look most forward to this summer is watching the magic happen in each and every camper and staffer. It always does.

Mike “Pops” McCarthy

I graduated from high school and spent the next 3.5 yes hitchhiking around US and doing various short term jobs including working on shrimp boat out of Ft. Myers Beach, FL and offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1975 I became an EMT then in ’81 a paramedic and worked both pre-hospital and ER emergency care for several years. In ’83 I took a break from paramedic work and worked on a small dairy farm in the middle of Vermont from Feb through Sept during which time I assisted in the delivery and care newborn of calves and also started IVs on more than one cow that was down with ‘milk fever’. My best friend, a young lady, came to visit in July and we became engaged and then married in late December. She will also be working as a camp nurse this summer.

I went to nursing school and became an RN. After 5 yrs of working in a pediatric clinic serving chronically ill kids with a variety of problems, I went to Yale University’s School of Nursing to obtain a master’s degree and become a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP). I retired from PNP work in 2018.

My camp experience includes several weeks of being RN staff at diabetes camp for kids in both Michigan and Indiana, along with being the Health Officer at Pretty Lake Vacation Camp for the summer immediately after graduation from Yale. I’m very excited to be here this summer and look forward with great anticipation to the start of camp.

Nick Paciulla

Hey everyone, I’m Nick and this will be my first summer at Sanborn! I’ll be one of the Big Spring camp nurses. I grew up in California spending many summers at camps and away in the backcountry. Working at Sanborn provides a way to combine two of my passions, spending time in nature and medicine. I graduated from University of Portland with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. I also have two certifications as an EMT and a Wilderness First Responder. When not studying I love to go climbing and trail running! I look forward to seeing you all this summer!

Wranglers

Josiah Neal (center)

Hello there! My name is Josiah and I’ve been at Sanborn since working in 2021. I was a consoler in 2021 on ABC ridge, I stayed on to help with the hay season, then became a ranch hand until summer of 2022, where I served as camp photographer and a wrangler, and then went back to being a ranch hand on our year-round team. I am now excited to be a wrangler for this summer! I grew up on a tree farm in Alabama running around in the woods with my dog making forts, climbing trees, and making campfires with my sisters. When I was old enough, I joined the Boy Scouts where I stayed in till I was 18 achieving the rank of Eagle Scout when I was 14. Growing up in the country and in Boy Scouts, I developed a love for the outdoors, animals, and photography. Growing up in the 90s and 2000s I have deep love for Lord of the Rings and Star Wars and love reading and watching them. (Fun fact I watch all the extended LOTRs once a year and read them every two years) I’m super excited to be a wrangler this summer to help facilitate horse trips and learning more about them. I’m always learning new things about horses, riding, and coybowing and look forward to passing on what knowledge I have to those that want to learn.

Marshal Westerchil (right center)

Howdy there my name’s Marshal and this will be my first year at Camp Sanborn. I just graduated from South Louisiana Community College with an associates degree in Industrial Technology and will begin job hunting after the summer so wish me luck! A few hobbies of mine include hunting and fishing which I attribute to growing up in the “Sportsman’s paradise” area of Louisiana. The part of camp I’m most looking forward to is making new friends and memories to last a lifetime. I look forward to meeting y’all and am very excited for what this summer has in store, God bless!

Justus Skeesick (far left)

This will be my second year at Sanborn, both as staff. I’m currently going to Columbus State University in Georgia for a major in Film Production. I have been working with my family’s property photography business and have gotten my drone license. I have also been able to work with local film makers for various projects around the state. I am excited to be coming back as a wrangler this summer and I am ready to learn and share what I have learned and my excitement with the campers!

Carter Bowe (left center)

Hey my name is Carter Bowe! I am originally from Amelia Island, Florida but currently live and work as a corporate analyst in Ft Myers, Florida. I am one of three siblings with 2 younger sisters. Growing up, my sisters and I loved all activities outside and had the privilege of attending camp for 6 summers. Sanborn played a huge part of who we are today and second session was a month we all looked forward to year after year. From summiting 14er’s, to riding horses in the backcountry, or sharing laughs and stories with friends and consolers around the campfire, they are all memories we will alway cherish. After graduating with a Finance degree from Florida Gulf Coast University, I have worked in Corporate America until I found myself thinking of what an opportunity it would be to spend a summer in the Colorado mountains impacting young people in a positive way. I love all activities outside from camping, hiking, skiing, fishing, hunting, or any time I can spend time with friends and family! What I am most excited to do at camp this summer is to meet all the campers and help develop the riding program here at Sanborn!
